Takes Place after a War with Iraq!

Drab, dreary and a total waste of my time. The plot is incomprehensible (so don't think about it too much). The acting is odd and wooden - I would have sworn that they were all professional body builders trying their luck at acting, but that might be an insult to body builders. There are no interesting special effects to redeem this disaster, but lots of fires, explosions, a gratuitous sex scene, etc. The only thing that caught my attention was that it takes place after a war between the US and Iraq that somehow goes nuclear...hmmm. Is Roger Corman psychic? Let's hope that "Iraq" was just a lucky choice for Corman and that the rest of his scenario doesn't come true.

Better -- and more disturbing -- each time I watch it

This movie never fails to generate strong reactions, both positive and negative.

Much of the negative criticizes the wooden acting, soap-opera beautiful stars, and unreasonably military tactics that lead to an enormous human body count.

But that misses the whole point. The actors and plotlines are supposed to be caricatures of themselves. We are presented with a seemingly utopian society, where everyone is beautiful, the world is united under a single government, and patriotism is rampant.

The further the movie goes, the more the viewer realizes just how horrific this supposed utopia really is. Patriotism is exploited to trick young men and women into going off to a pointless war. The beautiful people are mercilessly chopped to pieces by their insectoid opponents. And the united world government uses its control of the media to brainwash the public into supporting this bloody war.

Yes, the Nazi symbolism is a little heavy-handed. But that's the whole point -- the intertwining of this "perfect" society with such a deeply evil subtext is supposed to be disturbing. What's even more disturbing is how close to our recent (American) history this movie truly is. Yes, it's a caricature, but it's a caricature of a very real and frightening phenomenon.

How different are the government propaganda ads in Starship Troopers from the "Loose Lips Sink Ships" campaign or the "10% for War Bonds" posters in 1940s U.S.? How dangerous is it to have a society where everyone looks the same, thinks the same, and acts the same, even to their own death? This is the message behind Starship Troopers, and it's a chilling one at that.

And for me, it works.

You got to be kidding me!

I have been a big fan of MK since the beginning, although I must admit I lost interest in the game series after part III.

Buying MK Deception this past Christmas renewed my interest in the series.

This movie was crap and I can't believe I bought this mess.

Good thing I found it for 9.99 at the used bin, so I wasn't out of much.

I was expecting to see a REAL sequel to the first movie, which I found fairly entertaining.

I thought the first film was very good and does the game upon which it is based some justice.

Not the case with MKA.

The first problem is that they tried to fuse too much of MK2 with MK3.

Then, if you're going to replace a character with another actor (Christopher Lambert), then at least make sure the new actor does a batter job than the first. The first Raiden was a hard-ass, and you knew not to mess with him. The second Raiden was a wuss and every time we saw him he was going through a wall.

Weak portrayals of major MK characters was another flaw.

The actress who portrayed Sonya Blade was nowhere near as good as Bridgette Wilson (the first Sonya).

Same could be said with Cage (Linden Ashby).

What was the point of even having Ermac and Rain in the movie if they weren't going to be referred to? A very weak portrayal of Sindel, Kitana's mother and the actress who played her isn't fit to act in soap operas.

Line example: Kitana: "My mother is dead." Sindel: "As will be her daughter!" Gimmie a break! Stick with the first.

Well-intended but painfully cliched.

"The Invader" is a inoffensive film, but it falls short due to a predictable by-the-numbers plot and cliched elements that it borrows from many different superior sci-fi films.

While "Invader" is a cliched film, it does have it's merits. The script is quite good, the acting is hit or miss, and some of the special effects are decent (like the space ship chase scene in the opening sequence--some nice model and blue screen work), but a pace that moves like molasses, a unimaginative plot, and all-too-human looking aliens hammer it.

Not a bad movie. Cast is strong - Bentley Mitchum, John Savage, Paul Williams all turn is a great performance. Roxanna Zal (Rivers edge) might want to consider turning in her Emmy though. Her performance is sooo boring it brings the movie down a bit. Otherwise, the movie is fun. Explosions, fights, guns, twists and turns. Even a small role played by Gary wolf(scott's brother)! Great for a rainy day sunday afternoon...

great

I liked this movie. It felt a lot like The Last Starfighter (which, as far as I'm concerned is a classic). Wait 5 years and it will become the next Last Starfighter. It just needs time to age and be eclipsed by more movies that play off the same theme.

I don't see why most people didn't like it. The fight scene is so cheese-tastic, it gives Star Trek a run for its money. That is the only bad thing i saw in the movie. But it was really really funny, so its not entirely bad.

This isn't a Mark Hammill movie. He is only on screen for 20 minutes tops. To compare this movie to the Matrix, he plays the Trinity. Completely necessary and entangled in the plot, but is ultimately only a delivery boy for the ending.

What America needs is a few good volcanic eruptions?

As a Big Budget movie, I'm sure that "Volcano" took more than a few months to make. Too bad someone associated with the movie didn't take that time to wander into the local library (the children's section, perhaps), and check out a book on "Volcanoes". I've seen Saturday-morning cartoons that have a better understanding of lava.

Instead we get many scenes of outright stupidity that would challenge even the densest of viewers. In one scene, Tommy Lee Jones and an assistant are standing near a volcanic vent, and their protective suits start to melt (of course skin is stronger than a protective suit, so they escape unharmed). But in numerous later scenes, people walk by lava like you might walk past a lake. Maybe this is because no one seems to know it's lava. I lost count of how many times a character said something like "What is that stuff?" or "There's something really hot and glowing coming down the street, and things are melting into it. Wonder what it could be?"

In what has to be one of the worst scenes ever filmed, two characters load an injured man onto the outstretched ladder of a hook & ladder truck. Then they hang onto a dangling fire hose as the ladder is lifted above the lava. The heat is so intense that the fire hose SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTS, but our characters are unhurt (their boots smoke a little). I didn't know that fire hoses were so flammable...

But "Volcano"is not just a dumb disaster flick with bad science. No! It's also a Socially-Important Commentary on our Society Movie! Throughout the film there are numerous "social messages". These are so corny and contrived that they could only have been written by people who have never actually experienced them. A racist cop tries to arrest a guy for assault (in the middle of a disaster scene!), but then the two team up to help save the day. Aww. Later, a little kid notes that "everybody looks the same" when covered by ash and soot. Aww. America's racial troubles could be ended, if only a giant volcano threatened us all.

More? Oh sure, there's more! Tommy Lee Jones is the too-hard-working dad who comes to value his daughter. Said daughter is a selfish brat who learns some responsibility, and respect for her dad. There's a guy whose only role in the movie is to say obviously insulting things. This makes him the "bad guy". One can see the writers of this movie hammering his role out: "We need someone who's rich and yuppie-like and snooty. Someone like us, only not as enlightened. Someone who wouldn't make a Socially-Important Commentary on our Society Movie like we are!" Of course, bad things happen to him and all is right with the world.

In the end, the mysterious, glowing, sometimes-hot substance we come to know as "lava" is channeled into the sea, and all of LA lives happily ever after in a just and fair world. A world, of course, with a big smoking volcano plopped down into the middle of it. Certainly that won't affect the real estate values?

The lessons of this movie are quite clear. 1) lava is harmless if you don't touch it; 2) small children will inevitably wander into incredible harm (but emerge OK), and 3) only through the trauma of sudden volcanic activity will we come to appreciate the true Brotherhood of Man.

Whoever thought up this movie should be thrown into a volcano...

"Well I'll kill the man and the myth."

Who remembers Stuart Gordon's original robot-showdowns of "Robot Jox" and then not long after Charles Brand made "Crash and Burn", which was somewhat a loose follow-up which re-used the robot footage. Well supposedly the low-budget action sci-fi "Robo Warriors" is the third sequel (as there was Albert Band's "Robot Wars" which I haven't seen) and probably the best one to follow on from "Robot Jox" and "Robot Jox 2: Robot Wars" even if it really only uses Gordon's central idea. Although the threat this time is coming from an inter-galactic race lead by James Tolkan and James Lew under heavy make-up that has taken over the earth in the not-too-distant future, but if those are looking for a whole bunch of arena robot action might just be disappointed. As these gladiators robot standoffs between these towering creations don't really come into play, until the film's climax and there's one scene early on. Clunky but entertaining. Most of the time is spent focusing on resistant fighter / former robot jox fighter Ray Gibson (played with vigorous energy by James Remar) trying to find the last remaining legendary robo warrior machine with the help of a young boy and his grandfather who created these machines and then preparing for the final showdown for Earth's freedom. A lot of the time the repetitive story spends building up to the inevitable showdown, but it remains enjoyable with some lean action, chase elements and a busy pace with the material crafting out a myth of a heroic figure which would be told for many centuries to come. You can see most of the money went into the special effects and they do come off well enough for a b- grade production. One thing though, Richard Band's music theme did remind me of "Predator". An okay time waster.

You have to see this film!

The Good Book is one of the most enjoyable shot on video flicks I have ever encountered. It has a solid premise: in the future, people exist solely around the Internet. To venture outside would risk the possibility of becoming a solar enhanced mutant. To up the ante, however, an even more brilliant plot twist is thrown into the plot.

Computer repairman Joseph Cyrus (Brian Campbell) must hazard the outside world to keep the internet coming to customers who are as entranced as the flesh clutching zombies Cyrus must ward off. Cyrus, who had created a virus that was capable of decimating the Internet, is under the watchful eyes of the authorities. One gathers his dangerous labor as almost penance for his past sins. A God like being begins to appear to Cyrus (played by co-scripter, Barry Gerdsen).

He wants Cyrus to resurrect the dread virus and destroy the Internet. Cyrus becomes a hunted man as word spreads and shadowy soldiers hunt him in the night. This flick has some of the best action sequences for a shot on video film. Cyrus flees through a fog-riddled forest as flashlights arc through the tree limbs. It is an epic scene and to capture it so convincingly on video is a notable triumph.

When Cyrus and the `God' square off for the final confrontation, some very incredible f/x come into play (courtesy of special effects man, Fred Kraemer). The bottom line is: this is a very refreshing film that will have you gasping for air on more than one occasion.

While the acting is not the best you'll ever see, there are some very convincing moments. Some of the smaller scenes would have benefited by a little more discipline on director Giaquinto's part, but do not effect the big picture. The sets are appropriately dismal and shot in a gloomy nightfall. Giaquinto rises above the limits of the shot on video flick to deliver a mini indie classic that will be talked about by fans for years.

"Well, I'll be dipped in s*** and rolled in breadcrumbs"

Steel is one of those films where you constantly have to keep telling yourself "this is NOT a TV movie". A cheap, outrageously bad superhero vehicle for the acting... er... talents?... of 7'1 basketball player Shaquille O'Neal.

Commendably, the film does actually have three clear acts, and Steel's emergence, though underplayed, doesn't happen for over forty minutes. In-jokes are a-plenty, as it mentions Batman, Superman, Jerry Maguire ("show me the money!") and three instances of John Irons (O'Neal) having to net basketballs. The final time sees a life-threatening toss of a grenade. A lousy basketball player throughout, Shaq gets to quip "I never make these". Or would you prefer Richard Roundtree as Uncle Joe, who designs Steel's hammer for him? "I did the metalwork," he explains, "I especially like the shaft." Cue lots of double-takes and knowing glances, with Roundtree looking round, hands in the air, proclaiming "what?"

The special effects are reasonable for tv movie land, but, as this is (pinch me, I must be imagining it) a real cinema movie, they're quite cheap. Steel is badly written, contains atrocious dialogue, is poorly acted, shabbily directed and with an overbearing, repetitive musical score. It is, of course, tremendously entertaining.

One of the greatest action films ever made

John Woo knows, if anybody, how to make good, stylish action. And that's exactly what this film is; good, cool, stylish action. The plot is great; fairly psychological and quite interesting. It has a fast(and remarkably even) pace, I don't think more than 30 minutes passes at any point in the movie without a giant action scene. All in all, I'd guess there are about four or five major shootouts, and two chase scenes which are each several minutes long(without getting repetitive, fortunately). The acting is excellent; every single major part is well-played. John Travolta, Nicolas Cage, Joan Allen, Alessandro Nivola, Gina Gershon, Dominique Swain... all give great, entirely believable performances. The best are definitely Travolta and Cage, though; fantastic, truly stellar performances. The characters are all well-written and credible, right down to the most minor one. The action is cool and very stylish, in every single action-scene. The theme of the film is great; of course, the story is completely unlikely, with the face-switching and all, but once you get past that, once you suspend disbelief, you'll most likely enjoy the film thoroughly. The script is excellent, plenty of action, drama, and thriller parts. Also, you gotta love the sharp contrast 3/4's into the movie, with the kid listening to sugary pop-music, while people are shooting intensely at each other. Great film. I recommend it to any fan of John Woo, Nicholas Cage, John Travolta and action films. 8/10

This movie was too bad to be serious - ridiculous

This movie was really the worst I've ever seen! The scenery was terrible, you noticed they just used two elements while creating it: plastics and paper. The storyline was just weird, not to mention the many logical mistakes they made... How can the two guys speak when there's a vacuum? Why does the good guy not kill the bad guy, but instead just make him unconscious and lay him directly next to his laser-phaser-hyper-blaster-cannon-gun? Why is the android smoking? Why is the android smoking a cigarette? Why is the android laughing? Why is the android playing around on his chair? Why does the bad guy immediately kill Gibson after he gave him the "code" instead of let him alive and say he'll verify it and when its wrong he'd kill his wife? Why is quantum-physics (artificial gravity!) more advanced than artificial intelligence (android needs this earclip instead of recognizing the faces)? Just one more question: Why would anyone spend money on such a BAD movie?

Really, Really Bad

This has to be one of the worst movies I have seen. I generally like science fiction and was interested in it because it was a Mars based movie. It was hard to completely watch it though. The acting was poor and the editing was horrible. Scenes would cut to other scenes or jump around making it hard to follow the movie. The story line is really pretty weak with transparent characters and very little plot. It is pretty easy to predict what is going to happen by the end of the movie. There are some interesting fight scenes but that is about the only positive aspect of the movie. This is obviously a lower budget made for video movie. But all in all do not waste your time. There are much better science fiction movies out there.

This is wham bang thank you mam!! Amazing fights!!

Never mind the Matrix and the influx of Jackie Chan and Jet Li films. As far as martial arts films go this still has the best fight sequences outside of Hong Kong. The fights are amazing and capture the essence of Hong Kong chop socky flicks.

Merely having great fights wouldn't be enough, this has quality in terms of look and sound that a lot of Hong Kong films don't and it is minus the cheesy dubbing. What it also adds is a genuinely funny, if wafer thin script. It is of course just a series of events that give excuse for elaborate fight scenes.

Mark Dacascos stars in the lead and really shows his stuff. He moves like a cat, and really shines in the fights. The version you have to see of this film is the directors cut, the studio completely hacked away any sort of plot or character development. In the studio version we see Toby Wong (Dacascos) as merely a mercenary, but Wang's cut gives far more insight into his motives and gives the character an extra dimension. We get the chance to see Dacasco's acting abilities as well. He shows that he is an action star with more talent than most on all levels. You compare him to bigger money earners like Arnie, Van Damme and Seagal and he can out act them all as well as being even more impressive with the physical acting. Kadeem Hardison co-stars as Malik, who is initially Wang's hostage but they turn out to be best buds, cliché yes, but hey this is an action movie. Kadeem is hilarious, most of his lines are ad-libbed and you can see the other actors trying not to burst into laughter. Also Brittany Murphy is a scream as Deliverance a rather wacky motel owner, who is extremely randy and has the hots for Malik. The three of them together have amazing chemistry and it really adds to the humour. John Pyper Ferguson is also very funny as one of the bad guys. He comes out with some great lines, and also some hilariously cheesy lines such as `look its my favourite cheese eating, dick monkey' WHAT?!!

The film is pure mindless escapism, it's fast, it's funny, there's genuine chemistry there, and to hell with plot in a film like this, which features some jaw dropping fight scenes. Overall this is an action classic to savour. 8/10
